This is a software for enterprise content management, document management, web content management etc.
Alfresco is an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system deployable on three different kind of IT infrastructure. Beside the regular IT environment in an enterprise the solution can operate on a virtualized environment as well as up in the clouds too. Right now it is available only on the Amazon EC 2 and GoGrid clouds. The solution has features for document management, web content management, collaboration management, records management and image management. Like other stack products from the company, this stack too includes all the needed components along with the main application. Web server, database or a language runtime are all included and the stack is ready to run on installation. In fact besides this self containment, the code is also relocatable, thus multiple instances may be running at the same time. The virtual image is available for VMWare and VirtualBox environments.
The stack has a well designed web interface. Wizards help the user develop content easily and quickly. Alfresco continues to be developed on the open source model. The open standards give the platform quite a bit of flexibility in its features. It is easily integrated with commercial software such as SAP, IBM Lotus, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Google Docs. Alfresco in its turn uses open source infrastructure components like Spring, Hibernate, Lucene, and MyFaces. With the deployment options available, the product has the potential to bring down overall cost of ownership as in the virtualized mode you have the possibility of savings on virtualized servers. In the cloud mode, the savings can be even larger as the ongoing cost is based only on actual use.
